Cicadapocalypse

Dear Addie,

Ever since you were a tiny tot you have loved bugs. Like really loved bugs, and mud, and dirt, and water, but bugs - there's a no fear, fascination that is in a category all of its own for you. You pick up EVERYTHING! Now while this may be super fun and fascinating for you it leaves the rest of us on a high alert for stings and bites especially since you don't feel pain quite like most kiddos and oh yeah the fact we live in copperhead country. I promise we go above and beyond in that regard to keep the snakes and Addie safe. There are quite a few grey hairs I'll dedicate to that, but I digress. Bees, flies, spiders, beetles you're pretty inclusive in your love for them all.

Insert Cicadapocalypse, your own personal heaven to everyone else's annoyance with the first double brood emergence in 221 years! I mean - Eh! Cicadas are everywhere here in our woodland homestead and the constant car alarm humming you here all day long is enough to make you start twitching. Side note: for all the auditory sensitivities you have, that cicada car alarm sound doesn't seem to phase you one bit. I'll take that win.

Now the thing that I've realized about cicads is they are pretty lazy. It almost seems like they get tired of flying mid-flight, give up, then catch a ride somewhere on your clothing.

The others that are resting, dying, or dead on the ground are fair game to you. My fingers are crossed that we are nearing the end of all this, just saying. But with the emergence of this brood also came a new behavior towards our little insect friends - something I loving refer to as the cicada blessing. It's more of an obsessive-compulsive behavior towards them but it looks a little like you are doing a little prayer ritual. You pick them up and touch them to your forehead, nose, and shoulder before throwing them to the wind. I feel like these days I'm wiping a lot of dried wings off your forehead - not sure that's something I should admit but it is what it is.

This week was just another week in the Cicadapocalpyse. They continued to serenade us morning til night, catch rides when necessary and you gave out hundreds of blessings.

Enjoy it while you can baby girl.

I love you, the cicadas, honestly, I could do without.

Mom
