Communication

Dear Addie,

I've often said that communication is one of the hardest mountains we've had to climb in our autism journey. We as parents raising kids on the spectrum have had to learn that eye glances, simple movements, hand gestures, or inaudible sounds actually speak volumes in communication for our kids. Let's be real, the English language is really hard. There is no reason why we can't just spell "Colonel" or "bologna" the way it sounds and if that's not bad enough there are way too many silent letters that have no business being added to words - just don't add them! simple! But I digress.

This week you needed no words to say exactly how you felt. Your class was off on a field trip strawberry picking and the picture I received needed zero explanation as I've seen this scene before. After a few minutes of picking you decided to lie day on the warm ground and just wait until everyone was done,

to which you would pop back up and head to the car like it was no big deal you just literally laid down in the middle of a strawberry patch. Here's the thing. first of all, you love dirt. Your bare feet or hands feeling the earthy ground is your jam. So for you to lay on the ground is not alarming to me. The second thing I got from this is you're good with store-bought strawberries and being a strawberry farmer might not be high on our future employment list.

Addie, you always keep me laughing baby girl :) and your thoughts on strawberry picking is noted.

I love you.
