New Beginnings

Dear Addie,

This week starts a very important chapter in your life...big girl Kindergarten (Special Education-AU1)!

In this next part of our journey, I will take a deep breath and put my trust in someone else which is harder than it may sound.

Your lunch is set. Bag is packed. Clothes are out. You're asleep now and my anxiety has set in. I'm not sure if you really grasp the changes that will head your way when you awake.

I start to question anything and everything.

Will you go freely without tears (or worse), or will you feel like I've abandon you as I walk away? This is not our first rodeo of 1st days...I've learned the "just rip the bandaid off approach" is the best way.

I'm sure I've forgotten to tell your teacher that you eat spicy taco meat and carrots for your lunch (they'll probably wonder what that smell is that's coming from your backpack!) and a million other details that I know and they will soon learn. They will soon be in our club. Our "we love Addie and think she is amazing, although a little different" club.

We will drive to school and see all the other proud parents taking pictures in front of the school...one day we hope this will be us, but not today Addie. Today we are hoping to get you out of the car and into the school with as little struggle as possible.

What will the other parents think if they see you crying? I'll tell myself I shouldn't care, but deep down inside I do.

I will find comfort in knowing this routine will eventually be welcomed by you, because you love nothing more than order to your day.

I will pray a few extra times.

I will find a 1000 things to do to keep my mind occupied.

I won't exhale until I buckle you into the car at the end of the day. Truth.

Addie, I will trust you to someone else in this next chapter of your life. This someone has dedicated their life to educating you. Helping you. Supporting you. This someone is your teacher. Do not be afraid. I will be right here waiting for you when your day is done.

Let us both take a deep breath and show everyone how amazing you are!

We got this!

I'm so proud of you!

Love,

Mom
