Dear Addie,
This week marked one of the "sweetest" days of year. If you can face your fear of things that go bump in the night, mommy...um, I mean you will earn a sweet reward.
It's Halloween! Bring on the candy!
Halloween is one of my favorite holidays Addie! It's the day where we can escape reality and play dress up, while enjoying your brothers all time favorite food - CANDY! For as much as I love this holiday, I realize it could be a sensory nightmare for you.
With your sensory struggles in mind, I had an idea...
With the help of our sweet neighbors, we had a trick or treat "dress rehearsal" - just for you!
This was HUGE for us! Side note: you scored a lot of pink squares ;)
You see sweet girl, first impressions are everything! Unfortunately, this candy filled holiday is also the time of year where people pride themselves on scaring the heck out of each other! Yikes!
We both know that it would take only one traumatic, frightful experience, to ruin any future Halloween adventures! I needed to be able to show you (and remind myself) it's not all scary and if you follow a simple process, treats will follow ;)!
We looked at some super spooktacular decorations up close, even touching a few to see they were just pretend. In fact you independently even cozied up with a skeleton on a front porch rocking chair. It was pretty funny.
We practiced how to ring the doorbell, and say "trick or treat". You did great.
The only struggle you had was the fact that we weren't actually going into each house when the door opened. I'm sure you were thinking... wait - I ring the doorbell, they open the door - I go in and help line up their toys. Isn't that the way this game goes??? Not today my love - this game is way more fun because you get candy!
You mastered the phrase "trick or treat", but found it a bit challenging with the whole "put the candy in the bucket" part...you thought each piece needed to be consumed in its entirety, in that moment!
You found yourself very comfortable sitting on front porch steps or welcome mats devouring your reward, oblivious to anything but perfecting your fine motor skills in unwrapping your candy! But even with a mouth filled, in true Addie fashion you managed to squeak out a "thank you so much" perhaps with a little extra sweet, sticky drool ;) If there is one thing you should always remember, manners are important!
As night fell, it was time for the real deal! You know what? YOU DID GREAT! We didn't exactly get to every house like brother and sister did, but Clara and Gabe (ever so sweetly and without prompting) would run back to where you were and drop candy in your bucket. It was a proud parenting moment I'll admit! You scored the jackpot on older siblings Addie! Well truthfully dad and I actually scored the jackpot on kiddos.
So as Halloween of 2016 came to an end, I have to say it was a complete success, as we are already anxiously awaiting next year!
To you, my little Wonder Woman, I love you! And although you may now think that ringing doorbells always results in getting candy, I'm so proud of you! You continue to amaze me and remind us all of the joy in life!
Happy Halloween sweetie! Enjoy your delicious rewards!
Love,
Mom
