The Show Must Go On

Dear Addie,

The understudy. One of the most important roles in any production, yet often overlooked or never thought about by the audience. They are patient, vigilant, and attentive. They are a sponge to every detail, every line, every move, every music cue, learning not only one, but sometimes two or three different roles and remaining ready and willing to take the stage at a moment's notice.

The understudy. They often provide a sense of calm and reassurance to the lead role as they know if something were to happen, they would be able to step in and keep the production moving.

The understudy is the ultimate team player because like they say in show business the show must go on!

Addie, having been a dancer for 20+ years of my life, I often look at this unique life we live like a production. The music is often the same (who let the dogs out...) the choreography is repetitive and we have some of the best understudies in the biz - your siblings. `

Now don't get me wrong, Clara and Gabe are not here being forced to handle parental responsibilities, but they've been in the wings long enough that if need be are willing and able to jump in to keep the show going.

This week I had minor wrist surgery, that I had put off way too long, so it had now become necessary and needed to be done. With no time ever being the right time, and already canceling it previously, we scheduled it and then figured out all the moving parts. So wouldn't you know the day I rescheduled the surgery (not the easiest of things to do) was the night daddy had to head out of the country for work. My luck, right?! Side note: Daddy probably spent more time in an airplane than in another country because he rushed home to be with us...but I digress. Having our amazing understudies in the wings I knew the show would go on.

Addie, everyone performed beautifully. Gabe drew your meds with perfection, you did great waking up early so Clara could do your hair before she left for school. They got you in and out of wet bathing suits, ran errands, and made your staple meals (homemade mac ‘n cheese anyone?!) They did it all happily and without question. They knew the music; they knew the choreography - they were ready for the show. You even gave me an opportunity to update my resume as I am now ambidextrous at changing diapers ;) Thanks, Ad.

Addie this week our understudies took the stage and because of them, our show went on flawlessly.

Bravo.

Love,

Mom
