Trick Or Turkey?

Dear Addie,

And just like that this year is still proving to be racing by with Halloween 2024 officially complete. On to Grinch season! Just kidding that’s year-round for me, but I digress.

I thought, maybe this would finally be our year to give trick-or-treating another try. In previous years, you struggled to understand this glorious concept of free candy. It always seemed confusing for you to knock on someone's door and not actually go in. I mean, clearly, there’s something to gather—some sort of similar objects that need to be strategically placed in lines around your house. And surely they wouldn’t mind if you cracked all their eggs to eat just the shells. Then there's the infamous rule of waiting until we get home to eat the candy. We can't just sit in the doorway and consume it all at each stop. Just ask the Target cashier how much you enjoy waiting to eat candy after I've told you to wait to open your M&M's in the car and she innocently asks how your day is going, only to be met with a shouted, "Bad!" Let's just say waiting isn't something you find great pleasure in doing. But once again, I digress.

Having said all that we have had great growth in recent years, so we thought just maybe...

We had been discussing trick-or-treating and Halloween for weeks, and when the day finally arrived, I thought, "We got this!" On the morning of Halloween, I started my usual routine of peppering you with questions (because doesn't every teenager enjoy starting their day like that?). I asked if you knew what your costume was, and you confidently replied, "A skeleton." I also asked what we say when we go to someone’s door on this day, to which you effortlessly answered, "Trick or Treat!"

Thinking back on it now, I realize this might be where everything went wrong. I then asked, "What do we get when we go trick-or-treating, turkey or candy?" I thought turkey was just a silly thing to compare to candy, but you said, "Turkey." In truth, I probably asked you about ten times before school, and you only mentioned candy once.

That night after dinner, I asked if you wanted to go trick-or-treating for some candy, but you sternly replied, "No." My guess is that if you weren't getting turkey, you just weren't interested. Apparently, it wasn't a sweet tooth kind of day for you (I have no idea what that's like and doesn't exist in my world, lol ) because you also didn't want to pass out candy, even though you could have sneaked a piece here and there while doing so. Instead, you chose to go play in the pool, leaving me alone with the bowl of candy (someone with a permanent sweet tooth mind you, felt like I was being tested...) until Daddy finished working.

Addie this year, we may have been close to going out trick or treating, but with no turkey being passed out you decided no dice and wanted to swim instead. It's never a dull moment on this journey, but don't worry baby girl, turkey is coming real soon! Thanksgiving will be here in no time!

Love,

Mom
